I AM IN THE PROCESS OF ADDING A 550 SQ FT. ADDITION TO MY EXISTING HOME. I DECIDED(IT WAS DECIDED FOR ME) TO GO WITH A HEAT PUMP SYSTEM TO HEAT AND COOL THE ADDITION. THE ADDITION HAS A CATHEDRAL CEILING AND A BASEMENT. A RELATIVE HAS DONE THE WORK UP TO THIS POINT AND I AM HAPPY WITH THE WORK AND PRICE, SO FAR. I HAVE LOOKED INTO HEAT PUMPS, AND THE PRICES RANGE FROM $1500 TO $2500 FOR 1.5 TO 2 TONS. I WAS JUST TOLD HOW MUCH THE SYSTEM WAS GOING TO COST ME TODAY AND I WAS A LITTLE TAKEN BACK, BUT DID NOT SAY ANYTHING. FOR THE COLD AIR RETURN, THE DUCTWORK, AND 5 SUPPLY LINES---SOUP TO NUTS $7,500--THIS I THINK MEANS $5,000 IN THE DUCKWORK AND LABOR. CAN ANYONE OUT THERE TELL ME IF THIS IS HIGH, VERY HIGH, ABOUT RIGHT, ETC.....I HAVE NO IDEA, BUT IT SEEMED HIGH. I COULD GET ANOTHER ESTIMATE, AND PROBABLY WILL IF I CANNOT GET A GENERAL IDEA ON THIS BOARD. THE GUY DOING THE WORK HAS A SHOP WHERE HE MAKES THE DUCTWORK, AND SEEMS LIKE A FAIR GUY---AND MY RELATIVE DOING THE WORK RECOMMENDED AND WORKS WITH THIS GUY OFTEN. I KNOW IT IS HARD WITHOUT MORE SPECIFICS, BUT CAN SOMEONE OUT THERE GIVE ME A GENERAL IDEA BASED ON KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE. THANK YOU.

HKESTENHOLTZ, THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY. YOUR RIGHT, I THINK THEY ARE GOING TO USE A 1 TON UNIT--POSSIBLY RHEEM. IT IS ONLY FOR THE 550 SQ FT ADDITION, WITH 5 SUPPLY LINES. I THINK HE MENTIONED 600 OR 650 CFM'S WHEN HE WAS LOCATING THE RETURN. THE PRICE I THINK INCLUDES MOVING AN EXISTING GAS FORCED AIR DUCT THAT HAS TO BE RE-ROUTED AS A RESULT OF THE ADDITION---IT LEADS TO A SECOND FLOOR BEDROOM. ALSO POSSIBLY RELOCATE ANOTHER EXISTING DUCT INTO A DIFFERENT AREA IN THE KITCHEN---ALSO EXISTING SYSTEM. SINCE YOU MENTIONED THE PRICE SOUNDED IN LINE IF IT WAS THE ENTIRE HOUSE, I ASSUME EVEN WITHOUT THE UPDATED INFO, THE PRICE IS HIGH. IF YOU HAVE ANYMORE INSIGHT, PLEASE POST IT. IF IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN PRICE I LIVE IN THE CENTRAL JERSEY AREA. THE UNIT COULD EVEN BE LESS THAN A TON, I KNOW IT IS NO MORE. THANKS AGAIN.
