I am looking at buying a lp gas water heater for a new house. The man at a store said he was out of them and the new ones he will be getting in will have a new gas safety device and cost $80 more.

What is this new lp gas safety device? Should I buy one now or wait and get a "safer" one?

The safety feature requires the intake combustion air get pulled from up high. It is a cover around the combustion chamber.

Apparently in desert climates like California and Arizona people put water heaters in their garage. They don't have basements. Then they spill gasoline and poof! The cover will get the intake air from higher in the room, probably only buying them a little more time before the vapors travel higher.

Occasionally you read about somebody in the Midwest, where basements are prevalent, spilling gasoline in the room and poof.

If you have a basement water heater and don't store flammable liquids in the basement I wouldn't worry about it.
