Recently moved into a house where the stairs were carpeted. Took the carpet off and would like to stain the existing wood (that was under the carpet) to match the trim and exposed wood that was already stained...

Question is this: Do I sand the existing stain completely off (down to the wood) or do I just sand of the poly coat and try to match up the stain to the existing stain?

go all the way to bare wood or you'll regret it.

But lose the sandpaper. get a good scraper, learn to use it and to keep it sharp. you'll get a better, faster job

Excellence is its own reward!
