I am considering moving to a place which doesn't allow wood fireplaces, only gas.
One of the drawbacks of gas is you don't get
the hickory smoke smell. Are there any gas fireplace manufacturers that have attempted to tackle this problem.
I thought of placing one of the cast iron boxes
(from my gas grill) holding hickory chips to get a hint of hickory, but, wasn't sure if that would violate any codes.

Good idea. I had never thought of that. We have gas logs in our fireplace but love the smell of real wood.Just one question though. I just bought a new Jennaire gas grill and would love to use hickory smoked chips in it. Could you tell me where you found your cast iron chip holder. Thanks a lot. Brenda

If your fireplace drafts properly, you should not get any smell from the hickory chips!

Be careful that you don't put such a smoker tray on the burner if it is a vent free set. This could cause the unit to malfunction.

If you are using vented gas logs you could probably get away with at least trying it, but I would not recommend it.
