I have an old Williamson hot air oil furnace. When the furnace turns on, everything sounds fine but when the blower starts, it makes a loud (getting louder) banging noise for about a minute or so then runs fine.

Filters were changed last week and it had no affect. Any ideas?

The squirrel cage is out of alignment and/ or the motor bearing may have become loose, If your motor has a pulley and a belt, check for the proper tension. The belt may be worn,>Many possibilities, but sounds like definately something associated with the blower motor.

Check the ductwork.Big sheetmetal boxes have a tendency to "pop" when theres a sudden rush of air.If this is the problem brace the duct.that should silence the bang. C.
