Hello all,

I recently purchased a home and am in the process of adding crown molding and new baseboards. My problem is that there is a step down into the Living Room and I'm not sure how this should properly be treated. None of the trimwork books I have illustrate this. There is no door at either entrance to the room and there is no currently no casing of any sort on the passageway.

Our foyer opens into the LR and the Dining Room and we wanted to install some sort of pilaster for the DR passageway. If I do this, I have no idea how to correctly treat the LR if we do this since there's already a baseboard under the step. I've included a photo taken from the LR looking into the foyer if this is not clear.

Any ideas?

Gary Katz has an excellent book on the basics of designing, planning, and installing trim.

i'm confused by your description. Did you buy the house unfinished?

Excellence is its own reward!

Use what is called a pilaster Plinth or Base block.

You can make your own and wrap the base around it, or buy them to match the column and stop the base on each side.

Typically, with the capitol, you place the crown above it.

So Plinth / pilaster / capitol / crown

Here is a picture I got driving by of something similar in Rome.

The base wraps those blocks, a Plinth is higher and the base stop at the side.
