replacing my existing condenser and coil GOODMAN units for my 1000 square feet condo in NJ. The coil is in the furnace and the condenser is on the ground.

I got a quote of $1900 (installation and equipment) for a 10 seer 2 ton BRYANT.

Is that a good price ?

On the internet I see a 12 seer 2 ton Goodman condenser for $630.38, and the evaporating coil for $191.25 + free shipping.

Should I consider the online offer ?

Is BRYANT better than Goodman.

How much should a repair person charge for removing the old unit and installing the new unit (condenser and evaporating coil) ?

That's the general rule of thumb. Never go for the cheapest, never go for the most expensive.

I never heard that rule of thumb. HVAC systems today come with options for efficiency like up to 18 SEER multi-speed AC units, variable speed air handlers two stage heating, etc. I don't think rules of thumb can be applied. The only way to get a competetive price is to first become educated on the system features, then judge what fits your budget, including short term capital outlay and long term energy savings. Then obtain bids on competing, comparable units.

The 10 SEER AC condensor of the original poster is the lowest efficiency unit allowed by law today, and minimum requirements will soon rise to 12 SEER. It does not address any issues in the heating system or air handler. I tend to see these systems as being components that need to be properly matched to work optimally together.

Not the cheapest price. Reputation is worth more than gold, so poll as many folks as you can to find the company that does the best job. My experience has always been that when you go for the cheapest options available now, you wind up paying more in the long run. I like to say this, because it's true. My company may be the highest bid that you get, but in the course of the next ten years, we'll work out to be the cheapest. Efficiency and reliability have less to do with the equipment and more to do with the installer addressing the several dozen details required for a successful installation. Do your polling on a local level and if you ask enough people you find the company you are looking for. Take care, Randy Yates
