Just inherited a Thatcher cast iron wood burning (kitchen) stove...I would like to use this as a barbeque - outdoors. It is old and rusty: is there a finishing secret so that this can withstand NY weather (winter, etc) and not continually rust each year? Any help appreciated...

i have a old iron stove that my dad gave me.
He's had it for at least 25 years. It one that you put wood into it from the front, with two burnners on top. It is from the old,old days.
I would like to know what the procedure is to have it refinshed. Would i sand it down
and remove the rust from it before i paint it with a paint that is required for this type of stove, i dont plan on using it for
the purpose of heat, i would just like to make it look nice, it has been out doors for many years.
My dad passed away a few months ago, so i would like to restore it.
