When a room calls for heat, my baseboards make a continuous "ticking" sound. Is this normal ? How can i rid the baseboards of this noise?

As a kid, we had a similar situation. When the water pump on the furnace died, the contractor replaced it with a smaller pump that ran continuously. The water in the pipes warmed slowly as the burners ran. Since the temperature swing was much slower, the pipes didn't make anywhere near the noise after that.
