Pilot light gas consumption

What's the gas consumption (monthly or annual avg) of the typical pilot light in a water heater or gas fireplace? Is it worthwhile to turn off the pilot in a fireplace if its not used for long periods.

Depending on where you live, and the price paid for gas, the average monthly price to burn a pilot light is about $8.00-$12.00. If you want to get really technical, it also depends on height above sea level and the gas appliance itself.
