My father has had a fair amount of hard coal (anthracite) stored in a coal bin for about 4-5 years. The bin door hasn't even been opened I believe in quite some time. Maybe this is a stupid question but does hard coal deteriorate? Does it oxidize and/or lose its burning capacity since it has been setting that long? Are there any dangers in having it set that long unmoved/untouched?

Interesting question. Hopefully one of the heating gurus will respond (as I know little to nothing about this subject)--but I couldn't resist due to general curiosity!
I started out thinking, as it's basically solid rock, how CAN it deterioriate? But I tried some internet searches, and came up with the following link. It doesn't directly address your question--but it proves that things aren't always as simple as they seem!

Good luck; if you find something out, please let us know.
