Bvhvac
Just bought a new digital thermostat to install and it says switch off electricity to furnace and air conditioner. When I look in thefuse box, I see AC, HEAT and B.B on the same switch and Furnace. I can turn off the AC switch which doesn't look like its doing anything, but I can't switch off the Heat/BB and the Furnace one cause they have some sort of copper guard preventing them from being pushed. Any ideas? Thanks

You said "fuse box" and then talked about "switches".

I assume that you are taling about a circuit breaker panel and those are circuit breakers.

Now it is not clear how many different ones that you have. But the furnace and air conditioning should each have their own with nothing else on them.

And I am guessing that BB is baseboard heat. It likewise should have it own circuit breaker(s).

And there should not be a guard over them. What happens if they trip and need to be reset.

It sounds like you should get an electrian to check out the wiring and add more circuits if needed.

As far as turn off the power to the furnace and AC there should be a switch by the furnace to turn it off. Mounted on the side of the furnace, on the ceil or wall nearby. Follow the conduit/BX/sheathed electrical cable from the furance and you should by a switch nearby.

The AC will have a discount by the compressor. That disconnect might have lever (switch) on the side, or you might have to open the door and there will be either a switch or a pull-out "plug" that will remove power to the AC system.

If either one of those is not their then again you need to get an electrican to add them.

Note-I am assume a "standard" forced warm air furnace with split AC system where the evaporate coil (A-coil) in mounted in the duct work near the furance and there is an outside compressor unit.

Ya, sorry your right I meant Circuit Breaker. This is actually a brand new Condo I just moved into, originally they were going to be Apts but then before they opened they converted them to condos, so I'm not sure if I have access to the Furnace directly, I'm guess I should call association and ask them.

Thanks
