I'm looking at getting Central Air or a Whole House Fan installed.
My home is 15 yo with 1058 sf living space with in the future finishing the basement which would add another 1058 sf.
I live in So. Wisconsin so the winters can get pretty chilly and the summer very sticky.
My house is terribly air tight (not complaining) so I'm afraid that by anyone walking around in the attic (to install the fan) will ruin the great insulation I have up there.
And yet since I still have the original Heil Furnace so I'm also thinking of having to replace that for a yet more efficient one.
Then there's the allergy factor of household members and wanting to be able to bring fresh air into the house.
So it's safe to assume that I'm confused and needing ideas and links to heater sites.

I love my WHF until the humidity hits around the first of July. Then it is AC.
However, I am in Kansas City. In WI you have much less of a summer humidity problem.
But again I don't have any problems with allergies.
If you do go with a WHF then use one the Tamarak or Wishper Aire units.

are the ductless systems generally less expensive than a traditional central air? I have a house on a slab,so that would probably work well for me.

We have had a WHF in a suburb of Boston, and it works beautifully. Fan is mounted as high as possible in the house, venting into the attic. Attic is very well vented (all three vents). We open the window of the room where we are (and keep others closed) put the fan on, and it cools the place. Obviously, only works when the outside temp is less than house temp, so perfect for those humid/hot evenings. Wholly endorse the WHF.
