We are non smokers living downstairs of a house that we own, the upstairs is owned by another family member. they smoke upstairs and the smell comes through the vents. I have this summer bought new grills and filters which are locted on the ceiling. We have asked our relatives who smoke to do so outside but they refuse and have bought a smoke eater, which does not work. We have just bought a $200.00 air purifier , but still when our Trane xe 80 heater is turned on the smoke smell comes through. I going to take a pic of the furnace and go to home depot to see of we can buy a filter for the grill which is attached to the body of the furnace. Any ideas would help !!!

Regular HVAC filters can't filter out smoke particals. MUCH, MUCH too small.

However, I think that the electrostatic do. But they need installation and are not cheap.

But the whole things sounds like a problem with the duct installation. Needs to seal and possibly rerouted.
