I just bought my house and have had the furnace surfaced mid summer. It was installed in 1966...not very efficient. I have tried to light the pilot, but cannot get it to light. I open the pilot valve, and hold the reset button for over a min using a trigger lighter, but cannot get it to start. What am I doing wrong?

Have you checked the gas shut off valve that is located in the gas line that services the furnace? , this valve is generally located in reach of the furnace, you want to make sure that is on, is the gas furnace the only gas appliance in the house ?
