I've read a few posts replies and have come to the conclusion that the 70,000btu gas furnace is good for us (3000sq ft home). It is efficiency rated at almost a 97 on energy star scale. I notice that cool air blows out of the cold air returns during the time that the furnace is running. No cold draft when furnace is off from intakes or outputs. We plan to insulate the ducting, which is in our walk out, finished basement. What recommendations do you have--is it right that we feel cold air during heating?

Well, that's the problem. It is the cold air return...in fact, all four of them have cold air coming out when the HEAT is on. Is there a common reason or bad ducting installation that causes this?

Can you offer any advice? We have a 3000 sq ft home, main level, finished walk out bsmt and half upper level (loft style) with 16 ft ceilings. There are 4 cold air ret, one by ceiling on main level and other 3 on floor. There are 15 total heat registers between the three levels. The duct taking heat is 8x16 and the cold air return duct is also 8x16.

As you have stated. What you may be feeling is air flowing out of them caused by a lower air pressure in the room versus in the vent.

Air is being sucked to the furnace from a different return vent. Causing the air in the other vent to literally be sucked out of it.

While it feels like it is blowing out of the vent it more likely being pulled out of the vent by the room.

Some return vents have dampeners to reduce the air flow. I have also seen magnetic covers.
