I have an almost 19 year old gas furnace. This week I had a maintence service done on it. It works fine but the repair person told me that I might want to consider a new furnace given the rebates since mine is now probably about 65% efficent. He told me that the efficiency of a furnace degrades oveer time, it was 78% efficient when new. Any truth to this? I've been unable to find any supporting or cotradictary info on the web.

A furnace will/should not drop in efficiency unless there is a restriction with soot or something else that restricts the flow.

The newer units are 80 to 90% efficient depending on the model you buy.

Hope this helps!
