I heard of a very quiet bathroom exhaust fan that mounts in the roof rafters not the ceiling rafters. It is then duct down to the bathroom ceiling to a very small diameter opening.
Is this product out there or one like it?

Yes....look for "Nutone" or "Broan" brand. Should be available at any hardware store or contact an electrical supply store..
