How do you size a generator for your house?
What is the right way to install it? I heard you could plug it into your elect. dryer outlet, as long as you pulled the house main first. (Of course the generator would be placed out side.)

It depends on what you want the generator to
do for you. I have a 4KW Sears generator,
enough to keep the fridge, a few lights, and
radio/TV going after an earthquake. Add up
the watts you want, and get one a little
bigger than that. If you feed the house
thru an appliance connection (With the main
off in case the DWP comes back), you'll be
limited to the amps that circuit's breaker
can handle. It, in effect, becomes the main
for your emergency power source. A 30 Amp
240 volt appliance circuit would be ideal
for a 4KW generator. You'll want to put it
outside and down wind.
