I understand the electrical code which demands that boxes be of a particular size according to the number of wires which are inside of the box. Can someone explain to me the rationale behind the requirements? Is it due to possible overheating, or is it to prevent shorting (this would require movement of the wires inside the box somehow). I would like to understand the safety issues.

Absolutely ... the size of the conductors does dictate which box to use do to overheating.
Also electricity does create heat and vibration over the conductors, you may not see it with your naked eyes but it's there.
I've seen training and safety films where they purposely stress the wires well over their designed capabilities and WOW you can really see those babies flex and twist.
