Existing appliance circuit is not up to the current NEC code.
The appliance circuit does not have a GFCI and supplies power for a recessed light & refrigerator. I can disconnect the feed for the refrigerator, light, and install a GFCI, but I haven't been able to find any code requirements for either removing the old wiring or how to abandon it in place. Does anyone know if and where this is listed in the NEC 1996 or 1999. Thanks

If I were you I would replace the box in the wall with a deeper on and run a dedicated circuit to the refrigerator and put in a single receptacle, leaving the lighting circuit the way it was. That way you don't have to abandoned any wire.
