I'm curious about the fire-retardant quality of the newer, plastic junction and switch boxes. Are the metal ones safer? I've always thought that a rough edge on a metal box could wear through insulation and cause a problem. Comments?

The plastic ones will melt just as fast as any other plastic of it's kind, they are constructed a little larger to accommodate better wiring methods.
Whether they are safer or not I feel isn't an issue. If the wiring method using metal boxes is done correctly there shouldn't be any threat of chafing wires.
