I just recently purchase my home. It is a bi-level with baseboard heat. My wife is complaining about the baseboard heaters ticking in the night when they heat-up and cool-down. Our home was built in '78 and the heaters look as though they are original to the home. Is there anything short of replacing the heaters that eliminate that anoying ticking sound?

- baseboard heater tick
The ticking you hear is the expansion and contraction of the element itself. Sometimes the entire baseboard is installed too tight against the wall. Rubber grometts can be installed behind the actual base plate where the unit hits the wall. Generally the ticking means that something is too tight. I wish I had an easy answer for you, but you can try loosening up on some of the hardware that fastens everything together. Also, the elements should only get to about 150-180*f.
Hope this helped you....
