Unless the wiring is in an area used for return air to you heating/air-conditioning unit you should not be a problem with any type of speaker wire

Speaker wire, when used for speakers, doesn't carry any kind of current that could start a fire or electrocute anybody. Hence, few restrictions.

and there is no need to buy expensive speaker wire either, regardless of what they say at the stereo store. Just use appliance power cord (zip cord), as long as it's stranded wire, you will be fine. I would avoid wrapping it around or routing it with the power wires in the house, however.

Your installation should be installed to comply with Article 640 in the NEC.

Some of the replies here are not correct, and should not be allowed to remain because they show a lack of knowledge as it relates to the question.

AHJ, we don't all have easy access to the code detail, nor know where to look for specifics. If you'd tell us what is specifically wrong with the above posts, then we'd all learn something useful and beneficial for future reference.
In the mean time, I stand by my statement that there are "few restrictions" or concerns for speaker wire that's being used for speakers.

Running speakers lines for a home entertainment center is not as simple as running zip cord thru the house. I would not do that in any sound install, especially a new build. If you want to do this right, the first thing your going to want to do Pete is run 16 to 18 ga stranded shielded plenum rated to your speakers. Obviously, thru volume controls and the like is up to you. The reason zip cord is a terrible idea, is because it is not isolulated from the harmonics of your house wiring, low voltage items, and flouresant ballasts. Without the shielding you will experience a most noticeable hum. As far as using plenum over pvc is because speakers in ceilings create cavities, plenum has a far greater fire rating than pvc, hope this helps
