I'm working on remodeling a bathroom in a house built around 1976. I found the 15 amp circuit feeding the plugs and light in the bathroom is coming from a plug from an adjoining bedroom. Am I correct in saying that I need to follow current NEC codes if a make any modifications? (i.e. 20 AMP circuit for the bathroom plugs w/GFCI).
The circuit breaker panel is full so I can't add another circuit unless I add a subpanel.
Also, what are the requirements for additional wall outlets? The room is about 9x7 with a shower diagonally opposite of the toilet. Does the NEC require additional outlets in the bathroom other than the vanity outlet?

You should be able to add a tandem type breaker in the panel to install an additional circuit. Make sure the total number of breakers is not exceeded and the tandem breaker is placed in the panel in a position indicated by the label on the door or inside the cover.
(Big DOH!) Of course... talk about missing the obvious! I got a closer look at the circuit panel this past weekend (a Cutler-Hammer). Home Depot didn't have a tandem breaker (do they have them for CH panels? The "full size" breaker looks pretty small). Anyways, It's a moot point because I found a breaker wired to a single outlet in the basement I can remove and use for the bathroom.
