Howdy folks,

I am doing a bit of remodeling and have to put a switch box and electrical outlet box (about 1 foot below the switch) in an area where there isn't quite enough width for them. I'm coming up about 1/2" short. (I have depth, as it's a 2x6 stud wall interior "pipe chase"...but the 2x6s there near the hallway are just very close together.)

So my question for you all, if you please: Is it OK (by NEC code and proper electrical practices) to chisel out enough room for the boxes out of the 2x6 studs? Does this violate any code? As I mentioned, all I need is 1/2 inch or less. I could make more room by moving a stud a bit to the left....but I really would prefer NOT to do this as things would start getting ugly--I'd be cutting into a powder room area and having to deal with re-tiling the other side, for example. (I also wondered if maybe narrower boxes were available, but not sure they'd be narrow enough even if they exist.)

Your help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

I've certainly seen this done (chisel out 1/2" of stud) with no issue from the AHJ...especially if this is an interior non-bearing wall.

Thanks much Dana,

I figured it would be OK but still glad to see that I'm not the first to run into this!
