I recently rented a generator with 2-120 volt,20 amp plugs. I needed to run a 115 volt 15 amp air compressor. Yet I was not able to run the compressor, the motor would just hummmm and not roll over. Could someone explain why?

most all air compressors require a minimum start up of 15 to 18 amps depending on the horsepower of compressor. in most instances,it takes a 6250 watt gen with a surge of 7250 to start most any type small
commpressor. if you have a 220 v wire type compressor, it will run better. also, a commpressor motors are not wired to handle an up an down surge that generators produce. this automatically voids warranty on compressor motor. to determine if gen will handle look at watts the unit pulls. instance a 60 watt bulb on a gen pulls 60 watts. just add all appl and deduct aprox 25 percent for surge load to det if unit is sufficent.
