I'm replacing all of the cedar clapboards on
our victorian, in order to get rid of the old lead paint. When setting the nail heads so I can putty over for a smooth painted finish, it always seems the last tap with the hammer splits the clap. What's the trick? Would a nailer help? I'm using the same nails as came out of the 100 year-old claps, and none of them were split.
