I'm trying to install a new ceiling fan in my unfinished basement. Currently my power source comes into my ceiling junction box and not the switch junction box. I have two 14-3 wires running into the ceiling fan junction from the electrical panel and one going to the switch box. I want to set up two-switches to control the light and fan separately. All blacks, whites, reds, and grounds are tied together in the ceiling and I have pigtails for all 4. I currently have the Blue cable from ceiling fan (Light)hooked to the Black pigtail cable (HOT), and the Black cable from ceiling fan (Fan) hooked to the Red pigtail (HOT), hooked white to white and ground to ground. Do I need to change this setup in the ceiling junction box since my Black and Red pigtail are always bringing power to both? Currently the fan switch has to be on for my light to turn on/off, but fan never turns off. I want to be able to control the fan on one switch and light on the other....not too good with wiring...any help would be appreciated!!!!

First of all, I don't understand why you are using 14/3 to bring power to the fixture box. Why not 14/2 (black & white)?

How have you connected this 14/3 power cable at the other end? Does it come from another device or directly from the panel?

All you need is two wires (black & white) to supply power for the circuit. So, I will assume that you have black connected to either a breaker terminal or tapped from another device. Likewise, I will assume that you have the white connected to the neutral bus or tapped from another device. The red should be capped off at both ends as it's not needed.

Since you're using a 3-wire cable between the fixture box and the pair of switches, you need to wire a double switch-loop to control the fan and light individually.

You basically need to start from scratch with these simple instructions.

At the fixture box;

1) Take the white from the power feed and connect it to the white from the fan/light.

2) Take the black from the power feed and connect it to the white from the 3-wire switch-loop cable. Be sure to mark the white wire with black tape.

3) Take the black from the 3-wire switch-loop cable and connect it to the black from the fan/light.

4) Take the red from the 3-wire switch-loop cable and connect it to the blue from the fan/light.

At the switch box;

1) Take the white from the 3-wire switch-loop cable and connect it to TWO black pigtails. Be sure to mark the white wire with black tape.

2) Take each of the black pigtails from #1 above and connect one to the top terminal of each switch.

3) Take the black from the 3-wire switch-loop cable and connect it to the bottom terminal of one switch.

4) Take the red from the 3-wire switch-loop cable and connect it to the bottom terminal of the other switch.

Now you're all done.

There is actually 14-2 coming from the panel to the fixture box and there are two 3-way cables that come into this box also, one of which is running to my 2-gang switch box.

If there wasn't soo many cables, this wouldn't be soo bad to wire, but since I need to contine the circuit from my switch box on to other outlets, don't I need to keep my white neutral cable tied to just the whites since the circuit continues after the switch box?

The two complications in creating this double-loop start with the power coming into the fixture, but keep in mind there is only one 14-3 going from the fixture to the switch box, but there are two 14-2's in the switch box that feed more outlets and I have to continue power beyond the switch.

Can something still be done to get this wired correctly?

You did say that there were two 14/3 cables in the fixture box, one from the panel and one to the switch box.

It's too bad you didn't give me the correct details at the beginning!

You made no mention of powering other devices from the switchbox. If you need the neutral at the switchbox, then you can't control the fan and light independently with only a 3-wire cable.

Out of curuiosity, what's the other 14/3 at the fixture for??

It was my dad's bright idea to use some of the existing wiring in the basement that was controlled by a dual gang box at the bottom of my stairwell (SplitFoyer).

Since I put a Triple gang box on the inside of the basement, we still have to feed power to the old switch box that runs the light at the bottom of the stairwell.

You were correct........we are short a wire!!

I have an idea tho.......we have a completely different circuit that runs just below my triple gang switch box........might have to drill thru the side of the switch box and fish a 14-2 from an outlet box (on different circuit) up to my switch box (its only about 2.5 feet). Then I'll be feeding power to the switch box first and I can just tie the feed from the electrical panel and that other 14-3 in the fixture box together(which feeds over to patio light and GFI outlet).

I told you it was confusing, but if you can picture my basement where it had 5 temporary light fixtures in the basement all wired together with 14-3 controlled by one switch at the bottom of my stairs, then you'll see why there is extra 14-3 in places we don't need it anymore.......all the reds were capped off.

I appreciate your help as I think once we get another 14-2 from an outlet off completely different circuit up to the 3-gang switch that I'm trying to wire indepedantly the light, fan, and eventually fireplace......then my 14-3 to the light will work just fine, but I will have to make changes to the fixture so the power/neutral passes over to my patio light with nothing going to the ceiling fan.
