I want to add an outlet in a location that is not near any other outlets, but is close to a light switch. Can I use the wiring going into the switch to power the outlet. I do not want a switched outlet. There are two black wires, a red wire and a ground going to the switch.

VB, The switch you are describing sounds like a three way switch. The light that is controlled from that switch is also controlled from some where else in the room. The two blacks and 1 red wire you find connected to the switch are actually 1 black, 1 white and 1 red. Look closer at the wires and see if one of them was made black with a magic marker or tape. Unfortunately if this is the case you do not have a neutral in that switch box and you would not be able to extend wiring to a receptacle.

Do you have a basement below the area you want to install the receptacle? This would be your best bet for picking up a circuit. Give me more detail in case I can advise you further.
