We are beginning construction on a new house soon. I have been told as of recent that most new homes wired today have 14/2 wg sheathed electrical cable with 15A breakers feeding all lighting and bedroom, hall, and dining rm receptacles. Basically everything is 15A unless required by code to be 20A - ie washer, bath, kitchen etc. Is this true? Would be much easier and cheaper using 14/2 wire but we don't want to have problems later not having enough power available. Thanks for you comments!

15 amp circuits may be used for the general receptacles and lighting except for the areas you mentioned. The dining room receptacles must be on a 20 amp circuit and separate from the lighting. The electrician you hire should know the required codes regarding proper size wiring and will install accordingly. But remember that what the code requires is minimum and should be improved upon within your budget. Good luck on your new home.
