Please help me!

I am a new home owner and need help with some wiring. My current project is a new 3-way dimmer switch that is connected to another switch in the house. The base switch only has two black wires and a white wire. I am trying to replace a regular 3-way switch with a dimmer that has two black one red and one green. I have tried to connect them several different ways and have not been succesful. Any information you can give to me would be of great help.

Thank you,

lost
