My wife is wanting to extend our bathroom in our basement but the place she wants to extend it to is where our breaker box is. Is there any code for having a breaker box in the bathroom? Such as to protect from moisture and such? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jim,

Yes, there is a code about breaker boxes and bathrooms. The NEC does not allow the installation of overcurrent devices (fuses or circuit breakers) in bathrooms.

Thanks Tom! Is there any exceptions such as it being in a closet or no exceptions at all. Thanks again.

Wearing my inspectors hat, I'd have to say that a closet is also a place that the NEC prohibits overcurernt devices. The reference in the NEC is about places where there are easily ignited materials (linen closet, my interpretation) and as is specifically mentioned in the NEC, clothes closets.

If you live in an area where there are things like building permits & inspections, the thing to do would be to consult your local building department.

Most closets whould also have problems meeting the clearance requirements.
