We currently have a gas cooktop and an electric oven (the cooktop is located on top of the oven). We would like to install a new electric cooktop but are being told two different things. (1) The gas can be shut off and both oven and cooktop can run off the "220". (2) That we will have to run a second "220" for the new cooktop which will require new wiring and a considerable amount of money. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Hi chptraffic,

Not to put a kink in your plans here--but think twice before converting to electric! Check out this old thread. Note that it goes on for two pages...

You need to evaluate the existing wiring to the oven and the KW rating of the oven and new cooktop to determine which option is necessary. If the existing wiring is not of sufficient size to power both, it can be replaced or an additional line run for the cooktop.
