I purchased an above ground swimming pool timer on-line the specs said: Switch Rating – 20 Amp resistive or tungsten. I was under the impresion that I could plug a 20 amp pump into its GFCI, but when it arrived it was only rated for 15 amps (it made no mention of this on the web sits). Was I wrong to think it would work for my needs.

I used have a similiar setup that that you have now. I install a GCFI in the outlet for my above ground pool, plugged the pool pump motor in it and it worked fine. Sometimes AC industion motors and GFCI don't like each other but in this case it was fine.
