My older home has several lights that are switched on the neutral side as opposed to the hot. I know that this is no longer recommended practice ... and might not have been at the time, either ... but this is the case. I would like to install a dimmer for a particular light that is switched in this manner and would prefer to avoid re-wiring the circuit. Can you install a dimmer switch on the neutral side?

You should NEVER install a switch on the neutral side. It is not now, nor has it ever been a recommended practice. Rewire the circuit before you install the dimmer. Period.
