Contractor reluctance?
I've called several electrical contractors to come out and give estimates on some electrical work that needs to be done to a house. But none of them seem interested to come out and take a look.
The latest call came from a contractor who seemed initially interested. But I got the distinct impression that when I gave the address that seemed to blow it. He said that he had an "emergency" call and would call back but never did. Hmmmm... What's going on here I wonder? Is workload that good that they can afford to be picky?

Generally , yes.
Most contractors still hold to the "free estimates" philosophy, but free to you is not free to them. If you live way out or the job sounds too small, they are most likely going to blow you off for the larger more profitable jobs.
Ask around for referals and keep trying.
