in replacing a pendant lamp, i've found that the wire from the ceiling is barely an inch long. too short to combine it with the wire from the lamp. is there a way to extend the wire from the ceiling? solder in a inch or so? or???? thanks.

These type of connectors are often the best.

Install the pigtail extension them first and then push them on the wire. Once they are on they don't come off.

You can also use wirenuts if you can reach in enough.

The other option is to splice it in that attic at a junction box. Or to run a new cable that might be easy to difficult to very difficult.
