I'm planning to install a tile backsplash in my kitchen where it used to be a painted wall. Once the tiles are up they will extend about a 1/4" beyond the original receptacles. I heard about box extenders. How does it work and is it something a homeowner can do?

If the tile is cut correctly you can use the receptacles plaster 'ears' to hold them. you might need to go to the hardware store and get longer screws.

Since this is a non-combustable wall finsih you don't need a box extender.

If the hole is too big to catch the plaster ears then you can get some Buchanan Caterpillars (Spacers/Shims).

Lowes has them, by the wire nuts.

I found those shims at my hardware store today...looks like they'll do the trick.
