We currently have a concrete patio, but it is old, cracking and stained. We wish to build a brick patio, but do not wish to go through the breaking up of the concrete. Can brick be laid down on top of the concrete if you use sand? What would be the easiest and most cost effective to put in a brick patio?

I would think the concrete would make a great patio. The concrete would support the bricks, it's already compacted and stable, and weeds won't grow in it. Dampen the sand and compact level. Cheapest and easiest would probably be the 12x12 inch squares.
