My fridge has tripped both of my GFI outlets in my kitchen, so should I assume the fridge is the problem and replace it or could there be something else to check before buying a new fridge? Thanks for any help!!

The leakage current that UL tests appliances for is limited to .5ma The minimum trip that is allowed by UL standards for GFCI's is 4ma which is 8 times as much. If you have an older refrigerator, it may be leaking more current than the new standard allows.

You might want to have an electrician check the refrigerator and its cord to make sure it is properly grounded. If it is properly grounded, the refrigerator can be plugged into a grounded receptacle that is not GFCI protected. Your electrician can install a receptacle behind the refigerator for you.

Kitchen receptacles serving countertop loads require GFCI protection, other kitchen receptacles are not required to be GFCI protected.
