I bought my first house, an old house this past November (160 years old to be exact), it is now finally summer and we are realizing how HOT the second floor is. There is no attic, so our two bedrooms are essentially functioning as one (heat wise). We are hesitant to put an A/C unit in one of the windows due to a plug that is:
1.) only two pronged and
2.) "not grounded" per the inspector and subsequent electricians (both of which we are not).
Although the previous owners did have an A/C unit plugged in to this outlet (using an adapter) I was wondering if there are any safety measures I could take to ease my mind about any fire hazards plugging an A/C unit in there and still stay cool this summer?

well it all depends.is it a dedicated line.what size is the wire.what condition is it in.what size is the fuse.what size is the air conditioner.as far as it not being grounded that would be the least of my worries.
I am not sure what a "dedicated" line means. This room only has one outlet and we were told that the wires were not there to ground it so our best bet for having an up to date outlet would be to cover the existing one and put a new one in. We currently don't have the money for that, we spent it all on the house. The fuses I believe are all standard, and brand new... 150 watts does that sound right/ is that relevant?
As far as the condition of the outlet if that is relevant, its pulling away from the wall per the horse hair plaster, but otherwise seems in fine condition.

a dedicated line means there is nothing else connected.it's alone by itself.
what condition is the wire in. is it good sheathed electrical cable or is it rotted nob and tube that you can't tell what colors the wire are due to age.
and how many btu's is the air conditioner.it should say something like 5000 btu, 6000 btu,s.
what size fuses. 15amp,20amp,
