I AM PUTTING A NEW WIRE IN A LAMP FOR A FRIEND. THE PACKAGE THAT THE WIRE CAME IN , SAID TO CONNECT THE RIBBED WIRE TO THE SILVER SCREW AND THE OTHER WIRE TO THE BRASS SCREW. WHAT IS A RIBBED WIRE ? BECAUSE BOTH WIRES LOOK THE SAME..............

On appliance and lamp cord where the conductors are not color coded.....the Neutral conductor is "identified"....either with the printed specs or a rib....
USE YOUR FINGERS......NOT YOUR EYES.....
The rib is a groove that extends down the entire length of the wire....
also a molded plug will have the WIDE blade attached to the ribbed conductor.
"......measure Once.....cut Twice....
throw that one away and cut a new one...."
