I have a husky 240 volt air compressor. If the compressor electric motor were hooked up backwards, would this cause the unit to run counterclockwise?

If you have a single phase motor, there is no "backwards" in the way that power is feed to the motor.
The direction is built into the motor. Now some motors, can be reversed. But that is done by change the wiring connected INSIDE the motor junction box.
Now a 3 phase motor has 3 hot leads plus the ground. And the directions on those are control by the order in which the 3 hot wires are connected.
If you aren't sure check the motor label. But, in most cases 3 phase power is limited to commercial buildings.
