I had a new ceiling fan installed tonight, it replaced an existing old school ceiling fan. With the old fan the wall switch turned off the power completely to the fan. And it had 2 chains, 1 for the light and 1 for the fan.

The new ceiling fan has a remote that controls the fan/light. I would have thought I could still use the wall switch for turning everything off at once, but it no longer works.

Did a wire get connected incorrectly or is this what I have to deal with to use the remote?

Yes, you should be able to still use the switch.

So you must have left the switch out when you rewired. There is probably a single cable, a 'switch loop' that goes down to the switch and then back up again.

Can you describe what wires are in the box in the ceiling? And look carefully -- are any of the white wires marked with black or red electrical tape wrapped around the wire?

I haven't looked, I had an electrician install it, probably should have checked prior to him leaving, I'm pretty sure there was 3 wires coming from the ceiling, a green, black and white if I remember.
