My house is 8 months old and the paint has chipped in places on the porch railings. (I don't believe any type of primer was used before painting). I would like to strip the paint off and then apply a solid white stain. I have a sander...but is there something else I should consider using? The porch is about 20 x 5 and would take a while to sand.

You might do better with one of the chemical strippers, such as those sold at Home Depots. You use heavy plastic then to peel paint off.

Before committing to such a project, however, do a test patch. Depending on what has been done over time, the wood might not be worth staining. Paint hides many more sins.
