I want to remove paint from a fake copper fireplace chimney in my family room. Does anyone have any ideas or products to use? Do I have to be concerned with fumes? It's a gas fireplace.

I didn't convey myself clearly as to what I wanted to say. The chimney is copper, but it is painted, I don't know what kind of paint, it's golssy though. By saying fake, I ment that this is mounted on the actually working brick chimney.

It isn't clear to me what the actual surface of the "fake copper" fireplace is. That is important so that the product used doesn't damage the real surface.

If a latex "copper" paint was used over, say brick, Goof Off can remove the paint without damaging the brick. If oil-based "copper" was used, you would use paint remover/mineral spirits.

As a professional, I know I could give you a firm answer, but I need to know both the type of "copper paint" and the underlying surface material. Best I can do with further details!
