The previous owners plastered over the brick fireplace and then painted the plaster green. We've decided not to remove the plaster (too messy) but would like to paint over the green. Any suggestions as to prep, type of paint etc.?

If the paint on the pleaster is flat you can assume it is latex and you can just go over it with latex flat wall paint in the color of your choice. If the fireplace has been used you may want to wash the surface down to be sure there is no smoke residue that can bleed thru the new paint.
