You're probably going to be using a whole lot of Kilz to start out with on the nicotene stains. I'll leave the rest to the others here.

Thanks, JayF...I checked out the Kilz primers at the local paint store. Is there a version of Kilz that will stick to most any kind of existing paint? Can it be sprayed, if that's the route I take for applying the paint?

It can be sprayed, but the spray cans are expensive. They have a top nozzle can for ceilings, and a regular nozzle can for general duty. I don't know if the material that comes by the can can be sprayed, but I imagine it can.

It should stick to virtually everything. I went over everything on the walls from unpainted plaster, plaster covered with sanded panel adhesive, mold, regular latex, and- you get the picture. It's expensive though, and most (not all) sprayers aren't very efficient, so I rolled or brushed on what I didn't buy in the spray cans.

I know you're talking about actual sprayers here, but I've always thought the Wagners did a lousy, gloppy job- and the other ones out there are awfully expensive. Cleanup is a hassle, and you may spend as much or more time doing that and trying to get good results as you would with a roller.

In useing a stain killer be sure it is the oil based version as most companies are making different versions. These products along with Kilz( I like the Zinsser Cover Stain) can be sprayed thru an airless sprayer but unless you have used one I would just brush and roll the the interior of your house. The covering up up everything is usually not worth it. Be sure to have plenty of ventalation when useing any of the products as the fumes are pretty strong or you may want to get a good respirator. Be sure to cover the walls evenly so that your finish paint will dry to an even finish as these products seal the wall very well and need to be applied evenly.
