I have a swirl effect on the ceiling of my living room - not sure if it's compound, plaster or what. Would like to remove it, but not sure how. It APPEARS that it would sand off rather easily (I had a design of the same material around fixture in kitchen that I sanded off). But not sure about the living room because it's such a large area. Any suggestions?

Most ceiling textures are water soluable. Thus, you can spray water on it, let it soak, spray, let it soak, spray, let it soak, then scrape it off gently with a drywall knife at a very sharp angle: almost parallel to the ceiling. It should virtually fall off if done properly: let the water do the work.
